Guild Wars 2 Email Authentication Problem Solved – Tips For Keeping Your Account Safe

When I tried to log in my Guild Wars 2 account yesterday, it appeared that I need an email authentication to continue. I checked my email inbox but found nothing to confirm with ArenaNet. After searching on Google for awhile, I found something that I’d like to share here:

The reason for Guild Wars 2 email authentication:

Guild Wars 2 players have gotten absolutely slammed with phishing attempts following the game’s launch. ArenaNet has accordingly beefed up security for the game, starting with the new email authentication system that’s being rolled out since August 29th,2012. The system is lightweight and works without players needing an extra code to enter at the login screen, instead relying upon the security of your designated email account. All players need to do to activate the system is verify their email addresses (which can be done right on the login screen).

Once the email is verified, every time the associated account tries to log in, the account holder will be sent an email requesting permission. Account holders can deny the logon, allow it for a single instance, or remember the location in question and always log on from there. It’s not ironclad, but it should help players affected by these phishing attempts ensure that they’ll be safe.

Tips for protecting your Guild Wars 2 account:

The security team at ArenaNet is working on a number of measures to help protect your account, but there are some steps you can take to make your account as secure as possible, including:

- Always use a strong password that is unique to your Guild Wars 2 account
An ideal strong password is as long and unpredictable as possible. Four or five random but unrelated words can strike a nice balance between strength and memorability

- Whenever possible, only check your e-mails from a trusted device.
If you are playing from an untrusted location using Guild Wars Account E-mail Authentication, you can further reduce your risk by only checking your e-mails on your Smartphone. If you have reason to believe your account credentials have been compromised, change your password from a trusted location.

- Set up Guild Wars Account E-mail Authentication when it becomes available.
Whenever you attempt to login from a new location, ArenaNet will send an authentication request e-mail that contains both a description of where you are logging in from, and a link you click to authenticate the login request. ArenaNet decided to implement this as a mechanism that anyone can benefit from, since it’s free and easy for anyone to sign up for a secure e-mail account. Keep in mind, when you click on your authentication request e-mail, ArenaNet will never ask you to enter any login information. Verification requests are only sent after you attempt to login, not before. If you receive any e-mails asking for sensitive account information such as your account name or password, ignore it. Many players have fallen victim to phishing scams and have had their accounts compromised by giving into these requests for information. ArenaNet will never ask you for your password. Stay diligent! Protect your account!

Please note that for some reasons that the authentication email may arrive late, I suggest you write to Guild Wars 2 Customer Support like I did. They are very responsive and will reply you within 24 hours. As soon as you receive the email, just click the link in the email then “allow access” as you can see from the first image of this post.
