Best WordPress Comment System: Why Livefyre And Not Disqus?

If you are doing Internet Marketing, you must get used to blogging. And a good blog must have a good comment system for you to interact with readers. A perfect comment system for a blog must be spam-free, and easy for people to interact with one other. Sadly, it is not the default WordPress comment system, neither spam-free, nor interactive easily, so we’d better install some third-party plugins to improve it

I have started blogging since last year and encounter many spams than I thought. At first, I choose Akismet to handle spam comments. Well, Akismet is a good anti-spam plugin, but not enough, so I must install some CAPTCHA plugins like SI CAPTCHA Anti-Spam. But I think it is not human-friendly. You can also try the Facebook comments box, but it has a few shortcomings which I don’t like much.

Livefyre or Disqus?

Besides the above two mentioned, another two popular plugins are Disqus and Livefyre, both of which not only prevent spam, but also make the comment system more social interactive.

While many bloggers recommend Disqus, I highly recomment Livefyre. Here’s the reason why: Disqus is like a one-way street. Once you’re on it, you can move on easily at first but then you’re pretty much stuck with it. Comments are saved to the Disqus servers. If you remove Disqus, you’ll lose all the Disqus comments and are left with the old WordPress comments from the pre-Disqus days. Of course there’s a way to import all the Disqus comments back into WordPress, but I’m sure it’s not something that Disqus would make it easy to do.

Like Disqus, Livefrye saves comments on their servers. However, unlike Disqus, a copy of comments is also saved to your WordPress comment database. This makes it extremely easy to switch back to the WordPress comment system if you decide to remove Livefyre. At this point, personally I think once you start using Livefrye, you’ll never want to switch back to plain old WordPress comments.

Livefyre – Many Cool Features

I came across Livefyre while searching for best wordpress comment system and found out that it was faster and easier than Disqus, since it only took a few minutes to import the WordPress comments and when it was done, you can start using it directly without anything else to worry about.

Besides, Livefyre also has some special and cool features in comparison with Disqus, such as you can see who is “listening” the post, mention your Twitter & Facebook friends, share your comments on Twitter and Facebook, etc. And the coolest feature is the new one called SocialSync which was released on October 17th, 2011. What makes SocialSync so cool is its ability to capture Facebook and Twitter posts referring to your content and return them to your comment thread. On top of that, LiveFyre puts a link to your most recent conversation in your comments. This is great for commenters as it increases traffic back to their sites, and as a result it encourages even more commenting.

Some key features of Livefyre include:

  • Social Sync: pulling Facebook & Twitter comments into your content in real-time.
  • Tagging Friends from Facebook & Twitter: anyone leaving a comment brings their entire social network with them to the conversation.
  • Intelligent & Community Moderation: ability to moderate in real-time thereby increasing the quality of the conversations without affecting the quantity.
  • SEO credit: Livefyre is Google crawl-able so you receive SEO credit for all comments, including those originating from Facebook & Twitter.
  • Real-time technology: built on XMPP chat technology for the fastest, lightest weight conversations possible.

Saying Livefyre the best wordpress comment system doesn’t there are not any spam. Same as Disqus, there will be still a few spam comments even though you are running Livefyre, but it is not a big deal anyway. By the way, Livefyre offers both free and paid versions, for the free version, I think everything is fine except that you can only have “Up to 2 million monthly views”, which means that you have to pay for it when your blog has over 2 million page views per month, hope I will have the money then.
So, which comment system you are gonna use for your WordPress blog? Livefyre or Disqus? Feel free to leave comments below. Thanks!

  1. Hey Tu, Thanks for choosing Livefyre as your comment system. We appreciate you taking the time to write this great article!

Welcome to Livefyre! We’re excited to be a part of your community! Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you’ve any questions. We’ll be happy to help!

    2. @Dhara Mistry Thank u. ur customer service is great. i saw u support almost every blog which uses livefyre. amazing job, indeed! well, i have a question: how do i know my blog has new comment notifications? it used to have notifications but since i switched to livefyre, i don’t know if there are new comment cause the notifications dont appear unless i log in “comments” tab in wordpress admin panel

      1. @Tu Michael Hey Tu, I appreciate your kind words here :) At the moment, we support email notifications only and do not have a way to show comments notifications in your WordPress Dashboard. We’re developing more innovative ways around this feature and we’ll keep your suggestion in mind moving forward. Let me know if you’ve any other questions. I’ll be happy to answer them!

        1. @Dhara Mistry yep.another problem that i’d like it to be fixed asap is that i have to reply directly in the post, not in the comment tab in wordpress control panel.this is really unconvenient. also, all hyperlinks in previous comments were lost n i cannot add hyperlink to comments.it’s not good because i cannot use anchor keywords for hyperlinks

        2. @Tu Michael I appreciate all your feedback and totally understand what you’re saying here Tu. WordPress integration as well as anchor text hyperlinks are definitely on our mind. I would suggest you to keep an eye on our blog and Twitter account ( livefyre ) for any updates on this. Feel free to send any other feedback/questions our way!

        3. @Dhara Mistry @Tu Michael I like Livefyre so far (I have only been using it for a few days), although I am having trouble with Social Sync. It’s not importing my Facebook comments, even though I linked to my proper Facebook page. Still, I think it’s by far the best comment-leaving software available for WordPress sites right now. Don’t waste your time with Disqus!

        4. @JustinBarba @Dhara Mistry yep.luckily i started using livefyre in the first place so i didnt waste any time with Disqus.but as i already mentioned above, livefyre still need to improve some certain points. i really look forward to their improvements :)

        5. @Dhara Mistry @Tu Michael Thanks, Dhara–I just did a few minutes ago. I went through it a few times, and it seems to be set up properly. I will post the solution here (it’ll be a great way for people to see how good your customer service is!). Thanks.

        6. @Tu Michael Hey Tu, looks like the comment by ExpExc was somehow caught as spam. I marked it as “Not Spam” from your Livefyre Admin Panel> Search (Spam) and it shows up on the article now. Let me know if you’ve any questions on this.

        7.  @Dhara Mistry hey.how can i mark a comment as “not spam”?i have that problem again.comment doesn’t show.i can only see it at dashboard.i must say that u have to fix this issue soon

        8.  @Tu Michael Hey Tu, in your Livefyre Admin Panel, if you check “Spam” on the left hand side tool and click “Search”, you’ll see the spam comments sitting there if any. Clicking on “Not Spam” on those comments will do the trick.

        9.  @Dhara Mistry Oops.why cant i see that “Spam” on the left hand side? is it the Livefyre Admin Panel that I log in website livefyre? there is only menu from above that says “profile, settings, log out”, not on the left

        10.  @Tu Michael Hey Tu, here is a link to our FAQs that will guide you on how to access the Admin Panel: http://support.livefyre.com/customer/portal/articles/138868-what-is-the-livefyre-admin-panel-how-do-i-access-it- Once you’re get in to the panel, you should be able to see the “Spam” on the left hand-side. Let me know if you were able to get through!

        11.  @Dhara Mistry HI.I was able to log in Admin Panel.but the new prob is i cannot see that comment by AnthonyLaberge on the post http://tumichael.com/personal/diablo-3-official-release-date/ no matter how “filter” i use (spam, pending, trash, etc). I even searched for his name using the search function at the bottom. pls check this issue. i m very upset. this discouraged ppl to comment on my posts :(

        12.  @Dhara Mistry Hey.I still cannot find the comment to approve.could u pls check it? i cannot see that comment by AnthonyLaberge on the post http://tumichael.com/personal/diablo-3-official-release-date/ no matter how “filter” i use (spam, pending, trash, etc)

        13.  @Tu Michael Hey Tu, thanks for the heads up on that. So we couldn’t find any comment by “AnthonyLaberge” in our database. Are you by any chance seeing that comment in your WP database? If yes, could you email me the text of that comment at “dhara AT livefyre DOT com? We’ll definitely dig deeper in to this to get this fixed for you! Thanks Tu!

        14.  @Dhara Mistry Hey.I’d like to uninstall livefyre. Please guide me how to do it. it’s been a long time and the “hidden reply” problem has not been solved. Today there is also a “not-a-spam” comment cannot show up.I am really frustrated. Please guide me how to uninstall. Thanks

        15.  @Tu Michael  @Dhara Mistry Hey Tu, sorry that you feel so frustrated, our intention was not to ignore your issue. To uninstall us, you can delete the plugin, and that should be it. We hate to see you go, but totally understand your decision here.

BTW, our support engineer Connie and I did some more digging in to this, and we figured the issue for you :)

Looks like “AnthonyLaberge” comment was deleted by the user himself, and at the moment, we don’t sync deletes back to your WP Dashboard. That is the reason you’re still seeing the comment in your WP admin, and not seeing any trace of it in your LF admin as well as the user’s profile http://www.livefyre.com/profile/3406290/

As for the other missing comments, I am seeing some recent comments in the Spam section of your Livefyre Admin Panel here http://www.livefyre.com/admin/comments?q=*&max=all&order=created&site_id=296123&state=unapproved%2Cspam%2Cdeleted%2Cbanned

By any chance, are these the comments you’re looking for?

        17.  @Dhara Mistry “deleted by the user himself”? it’s unreasonable.cause i also told him to rewrite the comment. he did 2 times, and i didnt see it either. the spam comments are the ones i marked manually, not the one didnt show up

        18.  @Tu Michael  Hey Tu, we are not able to locate that comment any where in our database, but I can assure you we’ve done all we can to help you hunt this one day. The user deleted it, and possibly they didn’t repost it twice. If you see the reposts in your Livefyre admin panel, then we can help dig that up for you, but otherwise, it’s extremely difficult to find that comment as there’s really no trail to follow to find it.

We’d hate to see you leave Livefyre, but we understand you doing what you feel is best for you and your community. All you’ll need to do is deactivate the plugin and you’ll be good to go.

        19.  @Dhara Mistry “he did 2 times, and i didnt see it either” –> then how comes his comments still appeared on my wp dashboard? i already showed u long time ago and i dont want to dig it up. u cannot blame on anyone or anything but ur failed system. sorry for the hard wotd but well, i m uninstalling the plugin rite after this comment. thanks for all ur support anyway

  2. Tu Michael you have written a great post of Livefyre or Disqus, yes livefyre is best specially the comments point system and profile view system from which we can see the status of a moderator thanks.. for sharing.

    1. thanks for ur comments.yep.it’s really great.but i have a small problem.i cant see any notifications of new comments.for example, i only know u commented on this post by logging in my email but not wordpress admin panel. do u have any idea of how to configure it?

Not sure I agree with this. It’s very easy to sync the database, and removing Disqus does not touch your database. So, it’s a two way street for Disqus…

      1.  @Tu Michael I’m using Disqus right now although I’m pretty indifferent. I like that Livefyre has LinkedIn as an option (not sure if any data is sent to LinkedIn or not). Livefyre doesn’t allow “guest” access so that you can pick your own name when you leave a comment (although this is annoying anyways). Neither system is catered to WordPress logins which is the biggest drawback across the board. Having a first time user have to login AGAIN just to post a comment is a turn-off.

  8. Interesting, we currently use Disqus but find it a nightmare with automatic syncing to WordPress (ie. it doesn’t work!) – One thing I do like however is the ability to change your display name from your username to something a little more friendly.  Is this possible with Livefyre? (I couldn’t see the option!)

    1.  @GM24 sorry for replying quite late. is the “change display name” similar to the way my name appeared (Tu Michael). i believe that you can change your username in the livefyre control panel.

      1.  @Tu Michael Yeah sort of, I can’t see anything to change. For example, GM24 is my username, but id like it to just display as “GM” – can’t change the username as it is already taken and can’t see a way to make it select a different field as the name it shows.  (on disqus it can do that)

  9. Because of some great features I always use Livefyre for blog commenting. Livefyre is a very good platform and you can sync your social profiles like Facebook, Twitter etc. with your Livefyre profile. You shared an amazing thing about both Livefyre and Disqus.

  10. hy buddy thanks for nice post. I am using livefyre from first day of my blog. It is very good and seo friendly too. But, what about this site buddy? Why are you using traditional comment system? Swich to livefyre. It is very good. Thanks for the post again.

    1. u can read my conversation wt lyfire moderator in this comment section to understand why i m using wp comment system. u see, after using livefyre for quite a long time, i found it often unable to display some readers’ comments although they r not spam. i have no choice but to uninstall it :(
